Optimized Weapon Textures

DESCRIPTION

ShortVersion

This Mod reduces the texture size of almost all weapons by half with little to no visual quality loss.

LongVersion

As already stated in the short description this Mod reduces the size of almost all weapon and weapon-mod textures and i know what you may say now. Why on earth would you make those already blurry textures even smaller?
Well the answer to that is, in todays games diffuse maps are in general there to provide color information and in case of Fallout some small-scale ambient occlusion information. The main actors who make something look nice are usually the normal map and the specular map and just to be clear they remain unchanged!
So after digging through the textures of Fallout i’ve noticed two things. Most of the weapon textures look blurry and the amount of color and AO information they hold hardly justify the memory footprint they have. No offense Betty 😉
I know that reducing the texture size for weapons wont make that much difference in performance since most of time you don’t have hundreds of weapons on the screen but in fights with larger groups of enemies it will free up some texture memory for those of us who need every kb.

So what i did was basically reducing the size by half and adding a subtle highpass sharpening on them to reduce the blurring, the result is a much smaller filesize (480MB down to 170MB) with almost no loss in visual quality.
I left a few weapons unchanged for instance the Powerfist or the Bottlecap mine due to the fact that reducing the texture size would make a difference in visual quality.

So i ran out of things to say, i suggest you give it a try it wont hurt. 🙂
