Wasteland Nights – moon and stars textures

Enhanced Night Sky/Mojave Nights is back for Fallout 4! As seen before in Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Skyrim, this is a high definition texture replacement for the moon and stars, taken from real world photographic references, for complete night sky realism.

The default stars look fairly natural already, but something about them still seems a little artificial, and the default moon is noticeably low resolution. So I took my Mojave Nights mod and combined it with the refinements from Enhanced Night Skyrim, and tweaked the textures to suit Fallout 4. I think it adds a little more definition to the night sky, which should be all the more dazzling over a dark world with minimal light pollution.

Optionally there are less-starry versions as well, as you like. Enjoy!

INSTALLATION

Extract the “textures” folder from the archive into your Fallout 4/Data folder.

NOTE: If you have not enabled mods yet, you will need to configure the Fallout4Prefs.ini and Fallout4.ini files located in your Documents/My Games/Fallout 4 folder to override the default textures with the modded ones. This is as simple as adding two lines.

The first to Fallout4Prefs.ini, under the section marked [Launcher] add the line:

bEnableFileSelection=1

The second one to Fallout4.ini, locate the line that reads: sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\
and change it to:

sResourceDataDirsFinal=STRINGS\, TEXTURES\, MUSIC\, SOUND\, INTERFACE\, MESHES\, PROGRAMS\, MATERIALS\, LODSETTINGS\, VIS\, MISC\, SCRIPTS\, SHADERSFX\

UNINSTALLATION

Delete the following files in the Textures/Sky folder:

skystars.dds
moonshadow.dds
secunda_full.dds
secunda_half_wan.dds
secunda_half_wax.dds
secunda_new.dds
secunda_one_wan.dds
secunda_one_wax.dds
secunda_three_wan.dds
secunda_three_wax.dds

F.A.Q

“My moon disappeared or something else weird happened to the sky! What gives?”

I don’t know. This is just a texture file that replaces one used in the game by default. It makes no other alterations to the game, and deleting the texture files will revert the game back to the the default textures. There should be no abnormal behaviour, which may be down to the game’s bugginess itself.

“Is there a higher resolution version available?”

Not at this point. I don’t see the need to add additional load to the texture memory for very minimal benefit in visual definition. Having tried higher resolutions for the starfield texture, there wasn’t a significant enough improvement.

“I still don’t know how to enable mods!”
